The Secret of My Success

Everyone has a base point, or a secret, that they start out with that ends up making a fantastic product. It might be a piece of wood, or a skein of yarn... mine is five basic ingredients measured, melted, hardened, and mixed.

So, for all of you who've enjoyed my lip scrubs, or those of you just curious, here it is in its natural state before flavor and colors are added.

"Master Mix" (19/365)

Not much to look at, huh?  But it makes such a wonderful product.  I'm very proud of how I, a non-chemist kinda person, was able to think up this recipe.  I make up a huge batch and store it in a plastic container, and take out four ounces at a time to make into things like Pink Icing, Choc•O•Rama, or Margarita.  Making such a huge master batch is such a timesaver, as I run out of a few flavors each week.

What helps your business run smoothly, or smoother?  And is there one special thing that all your creations grow from?

  1. Looks like cake batter...and makes me hungry :)
That's a really smart idea to mix a big batch a fill and mix from there.
I try to work ahead on items I'm able to, but with so much custom work, it's hard.

  2. I really want to try some of your lip scrubs - I need to rememer to order some one day!

The main foundation for all my creations isn't a specific physical thing - it's allowing myself the time to think. I don't have a tv and I don't just leave music on all the time. My day job alternates between so busy I want to cry and bored out of my mind (unless I think up new things). When no one else is around, I just see where my thoughts will bring me and what creative ideas I may get!

  4. That's a smart idea and a huge timesaver. Could you imagine making a little batch for every single order? Gaah...

My timesaver is to make things assembly-line style when I have bridesmaid orders come through. When I first started I would make an entire piece and then move on to the next one, but it's much faster to cut all the chain, then start adding beads, then add these other beads over here...
